Terrible Lizard The word dinosaur means terrible lizard!
BIG andsmall. • Scientists believe that dinosaurs lived on earth over 215 million years ago! • There were many different species of dinosaurs. Some were as small as chickens, some were taller than 3 story buildings!
Meat-eaters • Meat-eaters or carnivores, had sharp, pointed teeth to bite and tear meat.
Plant-eaters • Plant-eaters or herbivores, had flatter teeth to grind down the plants that they ate.
TRICERaTOPS! Triceratops was one kind of herbivore, or plant-eating dinosaur. Triceratops means “three-horned face.” Triceratops used their horns to defend themselves and their young.
Pterosaurs! • Pterosaurs were flying dinosaurs! They were carnivores, or meat-eaters.
The King!!! • Tyrannosaurus-rex was the most dangerous dinosaur of all. His name means “tyrant lizard king.” His powerful jaws and teeth were strong enough to snap a bone like twig! He hunted and scavenged for anything he wanted to eat.
Habitat • Some dinosaurs lived in dry habitats, some lived in forested habitats, and some dinosaurs lived in the ocean. These dinosaurs are in a swamp habitat.
Extinction • There are many theories or ideas as to why the dinosaurs died out. Some scientists think that huge meteorites crashed into the earth. Dust from the explosion covered the earth.
Cloud of Dust • The dust prevented the sunlight from getting through to plants on the earth. Plants can’t grow without sun, so all the plants died. The plant-eaters died because of this.
Starving!! • The meat-eaters died because there were no more plant-eaters to hunt down and eat. • Some scientists think that the dinosaurs died from disease.
Other scientists think that an ice-age killed them off. An ice-age happens when the earth’s average temperature turns extremely cold. Reptiles need to live in a warm habitat. If the ice-age theory is true, then the dinosaurs would have died off because of the cold weather and lack of plants.
Buried • The dinosaurs all died off. Some were buried under soil. More and more soil was piled on top of some of the dinosaurs. The soil got so heavy, and pressed down for so long, it turned the soil around the dinosaurs to ROCK. The dinosaur’s bodies rotted away, but some of their bones turned to rock and were preserved as fossils.
What did he step in? • Not all fossils are bones that turned to rock. Some fossils are the imprint that the animals left behind. The imprint stays much longer than the animal does.
Fossil • Here is a pterosaur fossil. Paleontologists carefully dig for and study fossils. Pterosaur is pronounced with a silent “P.” So it sounds like this: “terasor.”
Eggs for breakfast? • These dinosaur eggs were somehow buried under tons of sand and soil and turned into fossils.
Can you dig it?C • Paleontologists are scientists who dig up the fossils.
Museum • You can see these dinosaur fossils at museums. Scientists put the fossils back together for you to see!
Goodbye • Dinosaurs were truly amazing animals! But for you and me, it’s a good thing THEY are extinct; if not, then WE might be extinct!! You can find out more about dinosaurs in your library.
