  2. Issues • Who should it protect? • Women • Homosexuals • African Americans • Elders • Disabled People

  3. Policy Solutions • Civil Rights • Segregation • Law Against Gender Discrimination • Pay Inequity • Women’s Rights • Age Discrimination • Workers Over 50

  4. Impact of Policy Solutions on Society • Gays In The Military • “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue, don’t harass.” • Gay Marriage • Determined by states • No More Segregation • Women Can Vote

  5. Impact of Policy Solutions on Government Institutions • State Government • Defense of Marriage Act (1996) • Federal • 1960s & 70s outlawed discrimination on race and gender • Legislative • Congress accepted Equal Pay Act 1963

  6. Government continued • Executive • President JFL, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon ordered Affirmative Action • Don’t hire on discrimination from race, or color • More employment opportunities • Judicial • Supreme Court: Brown v. Board of Education, Lawrence v. Texas • Unconstitutional • Bureaucracy • Sets guidelines for businesses and citizens so everyone has equal opportunities

  7. Opinion We agree with the policies, but more could be done. The Equal Rights Amendment in 1971 was three votes away from being added to the Constitution. That would have guaranteed equal rights for everyone. Businesses are suppose to hire a diverse staff, in some cases more qualified people may be overlooked. This leads to reverse discrimination.
