John Hendrix Arjun Rallapalli Andrea Huber Ajay Rao Satya Gunnam Vehicle Alarm Notification System (VANS) Georgia Institute of Technology Electrical and Computer Engineering
Project Overview • Vehicle alarm notification system to deter thefts and vandalism • Existing systems do not provide notification and video evidence • Priced at $749, VANS can be marketed to all owners
Design Objectives • Instant notification of alarm trigger to cellular phone via SMS • Video evidence of alarm cause through camera network • Local storage on compact flash; remote storage on Internet • Miniature night vision cameras with IR LEDs for maximum discreetness
System Block Diagram Rechargeable Battery (USB) (1.7mm via Terminal Block to DC-002) USB EDGE Modem EBOX 4310 (USB) (USB) (USB) USB Hub (Internal) (USB) Tethered Cell phone Night Vision Cameras 8GB Compact Flash
Tethering Provider: AT&T Network: 3G/EDGE Cost: $60 per month Prototype use only
Camera Positioning Primary Camera Secondary Cameras
Software • EyeLine • Control cameras • Retrieve video data from cameras and store • EDGE Card Manager • Communicate with EDGE modem • Send SMS • AT&T Communication Manager • Communicate with tethered phone • Send video data • JitBit Macro Recorder • Macro script runs all programs • Hibernate Trigger • Run macro once out of hibernation
Macro Execution Process VANS.exe Record.exe SendSMS.exe Connect.exe Stop.exe Rename.exe Transfer.exe Shutdown
Customizability • SMS sent to registered phone • Custom alert message • Password protected remote server • Different camera availability • Duration of video
Profit Analysis • Competition • OBS Mobile Watchman ($1500) • Viper 5900 ($659.99) • Profit • 13.6 million new passenger vehicles sold • Estimate 1% with VANS installed at $749 unit price • $98.5 million in total profit over four years
Issues - Solutions • Camera • Old camera is not night vision capable • Purchased new cameras with IR LEDs • Communication • EDGE Modem cannot access internet • Cell phone tethering for internet access • Battery • Incompatible connectors with Ebox • Terminal block between the two connectors
Current Status • 30 sec lead time to come out of hibernation • EDGE Manager sends instant alarm notification • All sub-macros written and tested • Major macro VANS.exe still being developed • Awaiting shipment of two cameras
Further Development • Improvements • Robust software & hardware • Stand alone communication module • Expandability • Sensor Network • Larger Camera Network • Video data to multiple servers • Integrated data collection
