  1. CMS Gas System Status Report Ferdi HAHN / CERN

  2. Content • Gas System Overview • Progress Review (Design + Prototyping) • Current Work Areas • Gas System Construction Plan • Schedule, Cost and Resources • Conclusions

  3. How many “basic“ Modules ? Plus piping contracts and many special items … like Inertion Systems, etc.

  4. Design Status + Progress • Basic Designs Completed • detailed studies + tests ongoing • Prototyping , Design checks, etc. • many module prototypes: Mixers, spec. sub-systems, etc. • DT, RPC + CSC full distribution prototype currently under test. • Purifier absorber tests ongoing • R+D for CF4 Recovery (pending)… for CSC • URD work for control system started

  5. Module Design Breakdown

  6. Special Technology • Special Channel Flowmeter: • thermal anemometer (LEP type) • PT 100 rise time measurement • Integrated manifolds: • integrate: manual adjustment valve, channel flowmeter and disconnection facility • Mixers: based on digital MFC; set-up in-house calibration facility • Control System: based field bus data transmission (most likely Profibus)

  7. Next steps • EDR • first ones could come this year, for instance CSC + DT • What are the CMS requirements to us ??? • RPC • design review ?? • Design Approval for Fixed Piping

  8. Further Work Areas • URD work for the controls • Make the first sub-modules production ready • finalize design drawings, pass EDR’s • Start component choices • conclusions from prototype work • suppliers comparisons, price/quality ratio, etc... • Establish logistics for rack construction • lab. space is under preparation (during 2000) • Continue prototype work until end of 2000

  9. Rack Construction e.g. a Distribution Rack

  10. …. After Rack Assembly functional test storage installation cabling Pipe connection integration test+ commissioning

  11. Tentative Schedule LHC Start Today

  12. Costs • TDR component cost estimates (1999) • correct for MSGC (remainder still valid) • To be added: • man-power (partly) • commissioning + integration • controls • Running cost estimate (Aug. 1999) • correct for MSGC (remainder still valid)

  13. Spending Profile Preliminary

  14. Resources • Gas Support Section (EP/TA1 from 2001) • Dedicated fte’s for all LHC experiments: 2 Physicists, 1 Fellow, 3-5 staff Technicians, 3 indust. support • Temp. man-power can be added at peak production, and for installation. Note: Available staff man-power cannot increase, supplements must be handled with temp. labor. Big effort to make optimal use of existing resources, for instance, stretch construction period to > 3 years. Minimize administrative overheads: in particular for component procurement!

  15. Conclusions Systems: • Gas system designs and prototypes are on-time. • Designs approvals and EDR’s should follow in 2000 and 2001. • Infrastructure and logistics for construction phase are being prepared now. • Rack construction start in 2001 • Long-term EP- Gas -Support will come ! • Give us feedback !
