Functions of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems • Transports nutrients • Removes gaseous waste from body • Transports oxygen and removes carbon dioxide • Fights disease • Transports hormones
Related Organs • Lungs: store the body’s oxygen supply. Draws oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out of the body. • Heart: pumps blood to the entire body. Contracts and relaxes • Blood vessels: transport blood throughout the entire body. Shaped like hollow tubes.
How do these systems interact? • They both work to get oxygen to tissues and getting carbon dioxide out. • The respiratory system works to supply oxygen for the blood. • Every time you take a breath, you are pumping oxygen into your blood stream. • This oxygen-rich blood is then brought to each part of your body through blood vessels.
Diseases/What could go Wrong • Hypertension: also known as high blood pressure. This causes the heart to work harder and can lead to a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. • Asthma: A disease of the lungs that makes it harder to breath or take in oxygen. Lungs are usually under more stress and weaker. • Cystic Fibrosis: A condition where thick mucus forms in the lungs and other organs. This mucus blocks airways and makes it hard to breath. • Ailments can also arise out of airborne substances and organisms.
