  4. What is pertussis? • Bacterial respiratory infection • Begins like the common cold • Lasts about 6 weeks • Spread by droplets made by coughing or sneezing

  5. What is pertussis? • Symptoms can be severe • Coughing can lead to vomiting, loss of consciousness • Choking and death can occur

  6. What is pertussis? • Can be deadly • 2000-2008: 181 deaths • 166 were patients less than 6 months old • Half of infected infants hospitalized • 1-2 in 100 died

  7. What is the pertussis vaccine? • Combination vaccine DTaP • Diptheria, Tetanus, acellular Pertussis • Capital letters = full dose • 5 separate doses given to children < 7 years old

  8. What is the pertussis vaccine? • Combination vaccine Tdap • Tetanus, Diptheria, acellular Pertussis • Lower case letter = weaker dose • Given to 11+ year olds or to 7+ year olds if only partially vaccinated • Only one dose needed, unless you are in close contact with infants

  9. What is the pertussis vaccine? • Combination vaccine DTP • Diptheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (whole cell) • No longer used in the US • Provided stronger immunity, but more fever, pain, swelling

  10. How well does the vaccine work? • Before the vaccine: • Nearly all children contracted it • “childhood disease” • U.S. 150,000-160,000 cases per year with 9,000 deaths

  11. How well does the vaccine work? • Since the vaccine: • 10,000-25,000 cases per year with 10-20 deaths • Fewer than 10% of adults get the booster • Cost: around $40 or $25 from CDC affiliated clinic (most insurance covers in full)
