VoIP Voice over Packet Packetized Voice Internet Telephony
VoIP Advantage • Highly efficient voice data transport • Less expensive infrastructure • Simplified network management • Creates foundation for value added services • Toll bypass • Unbundling of “Big Iron” • Quicker “time to market” service deployment
VoIP Past • Poor Quality • Solely Internet based • Not appropriate for consumers • Limited connection capabilities • Uncertain regulatory issues • Not backed by large carriers
VoIP Today • PSTN quality voice • Increasing capabilities – SS7, SIP, IP Peering • Significant cost savings • Scalable • Classified as an “information service” • AT&T, MCI, and other large carriers committed
Programmable Switch Enhanced Services Platform TDM Switch Why Use VoIP vs. Traditional TDM Soft Switch Application Server IP Network Media Server Access Gateway Proprietary service architecture Purpose built hardware platforms Features tied to generic releases Costly to implement and maintain Physical network dependency Open service architecture Multi-service software platforms Application features developed quickly with powerful software tools Separation of hardware and software removes development bottlenecks Location transparent
Value Added Services Conference calling Find me/follow me Voice mail Browser based controls Text to speech Visual voice mail Missed call notification Caller ID Distinctive ringing Anonymous call rejection
VoIP Components Application Server – Manages call progress and processing. Media Server – Manages media functions such as digit detection, announcements, and voice messaging. Route Management Server – Provides proxy routing and translates the elements supporting management of routes and resources, scalability, load balancing and prevents redundancy. Element Management Server – Provides provisioning and management for system elements.
VoIP Components (continued) • Each component resides on industry standard hardware such as Sun Solaris servers • Each component can be deployed to support load and redundancy requirements • Each component uses industry standard interfaces such as SIP for communication • Mix and match – Each component is available from a variety of VoIP vendors
