Persepolis: Honors Enrichment Assignment: Research on Iran QUESTION:“What was the Shah of Iran’s role in government, what were the reasons for his overthrow, and how did his overthrow impact the people of Iran, the U.S., and/or the rest of the world?” GarimaTomar: 4th Period
Role of The Shah in Government • The Shah of Iran rose to throne in a time of political confusion and economic issues. • He reformed Iran and started a “White Revolution”, a modernization of Iran. • Women gained the right to vote and various other freedoms. • The Shah also helped the economy of Iran pick back up and start growing. He aided the poor and started programs to assist civilians.
Reasons for the Overthrow • Many people viewed the Shah as corrupt and as a puppet of other governments. • Even though the Shah was trying to aid the poor, the wealth coming from Iran’s oil sources was not shared evenly. • The Shah did not abide by the Constitution, and was considered “too modern”.
Impact on Other Countries • In Iran, after the revolution, women were more restricted and forced to wear veils. Many of their rights disappeared. • America and Iran’s relationship became much more tense. Many people from Iran migrated to receive a better education in America during this period as well. • Globally, many people began viewing Iran as repressive.
