Exposition • Setting • Gives background information • Tells where and when the story takes place • Usually introduces the characters • The conflict or struggle begins here (initiating event)
Rising Action • reveals the problem(s) or conflict(s) in the story
Climax • turning point in the story • it is the most intense or suspenseful part • the greatest tension in the story
Falling Action • events following the climax • explains the result of the climax
Resolution • the problem or conflict is resolved and the story ends • almost always the last paragraph of a novel or the last sentence of a short story
