Memory StringCharacter Motivation and Change Describe the character in the beginning: Laura has a string with buttons on it. Each button is from a piece of clothing that has a memory tied to it. It is special to her because her mother is dead and her father has remarried a woman Laura resents. Event #2 Event #1 Event #3 The character feels: The character feels: The character feels: Laura is ignoring her father and stepmother while talking about the memory string to her cat. Laura resentful of her stepmother and only wants to think about happy memories with her mom. Her cat accidently breaks it and Dad and her step-mom help her find all of the buttons. Laura is angry and becomes frantic as she searches for the missing buttons. STOP! Think about what the problem is in the story. One very special button is missing and dad thinks to take another button off of the item of clothing it came from. Laura is heartbroken; that button had special meaning to her. She refuses her step mother’s help.

Laura asks for Jane’s help to restring the necklace. One very meaningful button is missing. Laura notices the buttons on Jane’s shirt. Laura ignores offers of lemonade and insists her storytelling is important. Laura notices the chokiness in her voice. Laura refuses Jane’s help or offer to comfort her.
TURN AND TALK WITH A PARTNER. Laura overhears her step-mother lets him know that it would never substitute for the real thing. She hears the chokiness in her voice. How is the character reacting to the problem so far in the story? How do you know this? How would you feel? TURN AND TALK WITH A PARTNER. They set off to the back yard with flash-lights to find it for her; Laura hears her stepmother find it. Event #4 Event #6 Event #5 The character feels: The character feels: The character feels: Laura finds the button waiting for her the next morning; she says “a good fairy must have brought it”. She notices the buttons on Jane’s shirt. TURN AND TALK WITH A PARTNER. Laura asks Jane if she will help her restring the necklace. Describe the character at the end. How did the character change? Laura realizes that her step-mother was not trying to take her mother's place.
