  3.  Your task • Study the account of Charles I’s death from eyewitness accounts. • Watch the clip from the film ‘Cromwell’ made in 1970. or ‘To Kill a King’ (2002) • What are the strengths and weaknesses of each account? Which would be better for teaching students about how Charles I died?

  4.  Your task – Causes of Civil War Charles I, 1625-49 • Read the section on the causes of the Civil War from, ‘Renaissance, Revolution & Reformation’. Write 3 headings in your notes and find evidence for each category: • Religion • Money • Power • What do you think was the most important cause? • Other causes?

  5.  Your task Let’s put Charles on trial again! One half of the class is a lawyer for the defence the other for the prosecution. Write a short, opening speech setting out the reasons why / why not Charles was to blame for the Civil War. Read your speech to an opposing lawyer and ask them to assess it against these success criteria ….

  6. SATISFACTORY You think Charles is / isn’t guilty but don’t provide much evidence to support your argument GETTING BETTER! You clearly think Charles is /isn’t guilty. You provide some evidence, but it mostly is related to one of these factors: money, power or religion WOW FACTOR ! YOU SHOULD BECOME A LAWYER You are very convincing in your arguments over whether Charles is / isn’t guilty You discuss all three factors: money, power & religion You use detailed examples from your notes

  7.  Extension task • Find out how the Civil War affected either Folkestone, Hythe or Dover. Is there any evidence locally of the War today?

  8.  Homework • Visit the National Archives and find this section: • http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/civilwar/g3/activity/videos/ • Watch the video clips and in your books note down the points each character makes about the causes of the Civil War • Using your own knowledge, which character is the most accurate in your view?

  9.  Plenary • Value of using paintings, films, eyewitness accounts? • Causes of Civil War: money, power & religion • Which was most important? • How much was Charles I to blame?
