Chemical Properties • Metals show a wide range of chemical properties • Reactivity ranges from HIGH reactivity (explosively reactive) to UNREACTIVE (gold) • Corrosion • Ex. Iron reacting with oxygen to make rust
Alloys • Alloys are mixtures of metals • Very useful • Bronze • Stainless Steel • Brass • You get the best properties of all the metals!
Which Groups/Families are Metals? • Group 1: Alkali Metals • Group 2: Alkaline Earth Metals • Groups 3-12: Transition Metals • Al, Ga, In, Tl, Sn , Pb, Bi, Po • Lanthanides and Actinides
Group 1: Alkali Metals • SUPER reactive • NEVER found alone in nature • (only as compounds) • When pure: • Soft and shiny • Sodium (Na) • Potassium (K) • 1 valence electron-loses it in reactions
Group 2: Alkaline Earth Metals • Still pretty reactive • Hard, white or gray • Great conductors of electricity • Calcium (Ca) • Magnesium (Mg) • 2 valence electrons Lose them in reactions
Groups 3-12: Transition Metals • Less reactive • Hard and shiny • Most Familiar • Gold (Au) • Silver (Ag) • Iron (Fe) • Copper (Cu) • Nickel (Ni) • Titanium (Ti)
Metals in Other Groups(13-16) • Aluminum- Cans, airplanes • Tin-protect From corrosion • Lead-poisonous • Not nearly as reactive As metals on left side
Lanthanides and Actinides • At the bottom of the Periodic Table • YELLOW • Soft, malleable, shiny, great conductors • Uranium – nuclear power • All after uranium are man made and last fraction of second!
