Greetings from Japan! • Head to full 90 degree bowing • Higher social status a longer bow shows respect • Foreigners are not expected to bow properly just a nod will do • Bowing means • Thanks • Apologies • Request • Ask a favor • Shaking hands are uncommon • Foreigners are an exception • Return bow same as received

  4. Dressing for Business • Dress to impress • Men • Dark suits • Women • Not wear pants(men find it offensive) • Skirts, dresses • Slip-on shoes • Causal wear is never appropriate

  5. Meishi – Business card • Give & receive with both hands • Home language on one side • Japanese on the other side • Japanese side up • Do not write on or stick in pocket/wallet • Given after bow

  6. Introductions • Only use the last names • San means Mr. or Mrs. • San + last name • Never use first name

  7. Use Your Manners! • Wait to be told where to sit • Eldest/highest ranked will be seat at center/farthest from door • If you are the buyer of the product you don’t pay for the meal • If you are the seller of the product you pay for the meal

  9. Gifts • The way it is wrapped is important! • Chocolates & small cakes are good ideas • If you do not know what to get • No plants, except a Bonsai • Give in odd numbers except 9 • Pastel colors • Do not open until after if wrapped • If bought in Japan have it wrapped

  10. Why? • I choose this country because • My dad was born there • I hope to visit it one day & need to know everything about it • All the information I find out interest me • I love to know more about my ancestry
