  1. How to improve your chances of attracting GPs Presented by Martina Stanley Director of Alecto Australia

  2. Introduction Martina Stanley • Director of Alecto Australia Medical Recruitment & Consulting • Past president and current board member of AMRANZ • BoardMember of Sydney Adventist Hospital • Over 20 years experience in the Healthcare Sector

  3. Attracting GPs should be easy - we have an oversupply of doctors in Australia

  4. What is your experience? Are you inundated with applications?

  5. Our experience is…. • More demand than ever for GPs • More interest in getting the best GPs • More willingness to pay

  6. What are the key things a GP looks for in a job? Good earnings • 60-65% for Private or Mixed billing • 70% for Bulk Billing • Increases in percentage after a certain amount of time • Extra Incentives – Lump Sums, equity, relocation allowances • Mixed billing is increasingly popular

  7. Minimum Guarantee • Expected for the first three months of work • Offering a guarantee for the first 6 months of work is attractive • Essential for small or new clinics • Average guarantee of $120-150/hour is now expected

  8. Lifestyle and Work-life balance • GPs value work-life balance very highly • Flexible hours are important, especially for female GPs • Lifestyle and location are essential. Highlight good places near your clinic such as parks, cafés, restaurants

  9. Team Environment • No GP wants to work solo where there is limited support • GPs like to work with at least 3+ GPs within a clinic • Team social nights and celebrations may be attractive • Doctors of the same age may create a positive working environment • Discuss the hiring of a new GP with existing GPs to ensure there is no friction between them

  10. Marketing support • Offering marketing to a prospective GP will increase the chances of them signing • Advertise to the local community and existing patients • Give them the opportunity to market themselves if they want to (web page etc) • Flyers, Appointment cards, Signs

  11. Induction program • This may not seem essential however GPs do look for this – esp if from overseas • GPs appreciate a good on-boarding session or induction to go through how the clinic works • It is important to be able to articulate how you do this in an initial interview

  12. Always plan for 1 GP to leave every 6 - 9 months. Planning in advance will help with your recruitment. You may have a full house one day and a shortage the next.

  13. Contract Negotiations • Always ask a GP to sign a contract • Discuss the details of the contract with the GP • Ensure all questions are answered • Send a contract to the GP immediately after an interview

  14. UK and Irish GPs • UK and Irish GPs with MRCGP and MICGP are able to work in Australia • They are VR and able to bill full Medicare items immediately • They are happy to sign long term contracts and work full time hours • The registration process can be long (6 months) however they show loyalty to the clinics they work at • They are subject to the 10 year moratorium and require a DWS • Patients love them!
