5th Grade Friday Wrap upA recap of our week 5/2/14 Mrs. Faust, Mr. Cimino, Mrs. Thierjung, Mr. Fleming, & Mrs. Mowatt Science Creative minds have been working hard in science! We have done a lot in our Models and Designs kit so far. Ask your child about black boxes, and the drought stopper. This week, they finished up their hum-dinger design. I am proud of the way students worked together to complete this task. It was difficult, but so many were able to design something that worked! We will begin go-cart construction next week.(SL.5.1b, SL.5.1c) Social Studies What an exciting week in Social Studies! Students participated in part two of an activity in which they had to face a dilemma in the second stage of the slave trade(Middle Passage). Students were arranged in groups and had to choose between three very difficult options faced by slaves in the Middle Passage. After their group reached an agreement on their option, they had to stand and deliver their decision to the class. Each group gave a reason why they did not choose the other options and the possible consequences to follow. We will be facing our third dilemma activity next week! (SL5.1A, SL5.1B, SL5.1C, SL5.1D, RI.5.6, RI5.9) Math We have been hard at work since finishing up our PSSA testing! We jumped right back in with Chapter 11, Data and Probability. One of the greatest challenges has been reinforcing the need for continuous studying as fifth graders. As you may be aware I assigned a ‘graded’ study guide for all math students prior to Wednesday’s test! Almost 100% of the students realized that they had not been studying like they needed to in order to prepare for our class assessments. As a bonus I allowed them to utilize their Study Guides, this was made clear when the assignment was given. Again, most students voiced that they did not need the Study Guide to answer most of the questions on the test, because they “KNEW” the information! Now that is what I call a success! Make sure you take note of you child’s hard work!!! I am encouraging to utilize this studying technique for both Social Studies and Science. (5.G.1, 5.G.2, 5.MD.1, 5.OA.3) Important Upcoming Events • 5th grade dance 5/2 @ the Feasterville Fire House from 7-9:30. We hope to see you there!
