5th Grade Friday Wrap upA recap of our week 5/9/14 Mrs. Faust, Mr. Cimino, Mrs. Thierjung, Mr. Fleming, & Mrs. Mowatt Science Students were engineers this week in science! Their job was to design a go-cart that could roll freely down a ramp. Students learned the 5 step design process-design, construction, testing, evaluation and redesign. By using this process, most students were able to construct a working go-cart. Next week, we will be continuing go-cart design by adding a new challenge! (SL.5.1b, SL.5.1c) Social Studies What an exciting week in Social Studies! Students participated in part two of an activity in which they had to face a dilemma in the second stage of the slave trade(Middle Passage). Students were arranged in groups and had to choose between three very difficult options faced by slaves in the Middle Passage. After their group reached an agreement on their option, they had to stand and deliver their decision to the class. Each group gave a reason why they did not choose the other options and the possible consequences to follow. We will be facing our third dilemma activity next week! (SL5.1A, SL5.1B, SL5.1C, SL5.1D, RI.5.6, RI5.9) Math We quickly finished another whole topic the past seven school days!!! Volume was a short chapter with only a few lessons, but it had quite a bit of meaty math within it! Your child should be very familiar with volume now, and multiple ways to solve various problems. We did culminate this week with another assessment of this material. Again, I had the students ‘study’ by making and utilizing a study guide during the assessment! I am glad to say just about everyone fulfilled the requirements of the study guide assignment! Please encourage your child to really take advantage of this super ‘new’ way for them to study but utilizing it in all subject areas! (5.MD.l1, 5.MD.3., 5.MD.4., 5.MD.5) Important Upcoming Events • Instrumental concert on Monday! Reminders *We can always be reached by email should you have any concerns or questions.
