5th Grade Friday Wrap upA recap of our week 11/8/13 Mrs. Faust, Mr. Cimino, Mrs. Thierjung, Mr. Fleming, & Mrs. Mowatt Reading We are extending our Science and Social Studies curriculum into our Language Arts block. After each Shared Reading Unit Lesson, we will assess the students’ ability to use the strategies learned. Each week the students are given either a Science or Social Studies passage that correlates with their current curriculum to use that weeks strategies with!(RI.5.1 and RI.5.8) Science This week in Science we began our Too Good for Drugs unit. We discussed setting goals and students practiced setting a goal that was important, positive, specific, and possible. I look forward to hearing from students about the achievement of their family goals! We also talked about good communication and how it’s important to look, listen, and ask when communicating. A majority of this program revolves around student discussion and role-play, so encourage your child to get involved. (SL.5.1d, SL.5.1c) Social Studies We started our unit entitled Comparing the Thirteen English Colonies with an introduction to the chapter. Then we explored the key vocabulary for the chapter and how it is used in the context of the unit. Next we embarked on the geography, economy ,and religion in the three Colonial Regions. We ended the week with a salute to our Veterans. (RL5.2, L5.4, RI5.3) Math We worked our way through long division this week! Your children can vouch for why we call it that! Our goal was to work one digit at a time, and pay close attention to each digit along the way! (5.NBT.6) I am very pleased to say that we have come a long way! The week was rounded off with ‘Real World Problems’ or ‘Word Problems’ using the operational skills of multiplication and division. (5.NBT.5, 5.NBT.6,F.OA.1, and 5.OA.2) A thorough review will be done on Tuesday of next week with our test on Wednesday! Important Upcoming Events • No school on Monday to observe Veteran’s Day. Thank a Veteran! • Morning tutoring begins Tuesday, November 12th for anyone who was notified.
