Expectations Students Need: • Quality instrument, bow, and case • Rosin and cleaning cloth • Rock stop for cellos and basses • Sound Innovations for Strings, book 1 • Music stand Students Should: • Practice at least 4 times a week • Start out practicing for 10-15 minutes each time. (Trust me. You’ll be using muscles you didn’t know you have!) • Practice assigned songs and explore music they find interesting Parents Should: • Help establish a practice routine • Offer encouragement!
Instrument Care • Handle carefully • Always put your instrument in the case when you’re not playing • Always loosen your bow when you’re done • Use a soft cloth to clean off fingerprints and dust • Don’t keep it in extremely hot or extremely cold places – it can crack or come unglued • DON’T try to fix things at home – either Mrs. Stallard or your rental shop will fix any problems Click for more!

Violin/Viola Posture • Cover your shoulder with your instrument • Turn your head to the left and settle your jaw onto the chinrest • Keep your left wrist straight • Your left elbow should point down Click the camera!
Cello Posture • Sit tall • Feet flat on the ground • Pull your cello back at an angle – it should rest on your chest • Knees below the C-bout • Left elbow is raised to make a straight line from middle finger to elbow Click the camera!
Bass Posture • Stand tall • Feet apart • First finger tape at eye level • Let the bass rest midway between bellybutton and hip bone • Left elbow is raised to make a straight line from middle finger to elbow Click the camera!
