COMMON NOUNS • Common noun refers to a category or a class of people, places, things, or ideas. • Do not capitalize a common noun unless it begins a sentence Common nouns • She is going to school Proper nouns • She is going to Broadmoor School Click me~

COUNTABLE NOUNS Items that can be counted Adding “s” to make plural Some are irregular plural • EXAMPLE Book = books Photo = photos Eye = eyes Idea = ideas Child = children Mouse = mice Tooth = teeth Foot = feet Cargo = cargoes Baby = babies Jelly = jellies Story = stories
How countable nouns are used Using “a” for consonant or “an” vowel • A cat, a bee, a frog. • An elephant, an owl, an umbrella Using “the” • Look at the moon. • The sky grew darker and darker. • I’ll turn the oven. • Where is the nearest supermarket. • The last train leaves at 9.30 a.m. Click me~
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS Cannot be regarded as items Do not form plural Do not use a/an with uncountable nouns • EXAMPLE cheese air cream gas wood silver maize sugar
How uncountable nouns are used Can be used on their own in general statements • I don’t like cheese. Can be used with “some” • There’s some cheese in the fridge. Can be used with “the” • Put the cheese back in the fridge. Can be used with other determiners, quantity words and possessive • I don’t eat much cheese. • That cheese is quite delicious. • My hair needs a wash • Grandad’s health is deteriorating Click me~
