  1. Valley High School CAHSEE 2012-2013 School Year

What is the CAHSEE? • A statewide exam • Since 1999, students must pass this test to earn a high school diploma • 2 sections: English Language Arts and Mathematics • English test is given on first day, Math test is given on second day. • Students must pass both sections! • Students have multiple opportunities to pass

  3. English Language-Arts (ELA) • Consists of word analysis, reading comprehension, responding to literature, writing strategies, and writing conventions • 72 Multiple Choice Questions • 1 Essay/Writing Task

  4. Mathematics • Consists of Algebra, Statistics, Geometry, and Math Reasoning • Students must also demonstrate skills in computation and a foundation of arithmetic, including working with decimals, fractions, and percentages • 92 Multiple Choice Questions

  5. When do Students Take the CAHSEE? • The first attempt is in 10th grade • If the student fails in 10th grade, 11th graders re-take on November 6-7 and March 12-13 • 12th graders re-take on July 23-24, November 6-7, February 5-6, March 12-13, and May 7-8 • For Seniors, the last chance to pass, and receive a diploma in June, is March 12-13 • We want all students to pass on March 12-13

  6. CAHSEE Scoring • Scores range from 275-450 • A passing score of 350 is required in order to pass. This score is acceptable for graduation. • A score of 380 is required to meet proficiency. This is the goal for Valley High School students.

  7. When Are Results Available? • School districts and households receive the results approximately 8 weeks after each test is taken • School counselors will inform students if they pass or fail • Parents may contact the counselor to discuss and/or review the results

  8. How Can My Child Get Help? • 145 11th/12th grade students are currently enrolled in a CAHSEE prep course • Students will get a study packet next week • Saturday workshops at VHS: February 9 to March 9, 2013 from 8:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M, Room 8-3 • Study Island, on-line tutoring, is available through Valley High School ELA classes

  9. What Can I Do To Help? • Take advantage of available resources • Maintain contact with your child’s counselor • Make sure your child is studying at home • Make sure your child rests well and eats breakfast on test days • Be firm about the seriousness of the test • Speak positively about your child’s ability to pass the test. Encourage your child!

  10. Options for Students Who Do Not Pass • Seniors are given two years after their expected graduation date to retake the exam • Students who do not pass are offered all CAHSEE Preparation opportunities • Additional year(s) at a public high school or alternative programs are possible
