It is said that its name, White Tower, comes from: • A Jew death penalty prisoner that painted it white exchanging his liberty. OR • It was the Sultan’s, Abdul-Hamit wish Today it is a museum.
ΚΑΜΑΡΑ(Αψίδα του Γαλέριου)KAMARA (Triumph Arch of Galerius)
Arch of Galerius • Built in 4th century A.D. • In honour to the Roman Emperor Galerius after his victory over the Persians in 306 A.D. • There are representations in relief and Greek inscriptions in between where the war tactics of the emperor are told.
Saint Demetrius • It is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in our city. • Underneath the church there is a large old- Christian catacomb and the place where the Saint was imprisoned, tortured and buried. • There, myrrh springs outwith healing properties. • Leontios, a prefect, healed from an incurable disease, extended the church.
Rotonda • World heritage monument of UNESCO • It got its name from its circular shape. • It has a lot of similarities to the Pantheon in Rome. • It was about to become Galerius’ mausoleum but at the end it is a church of St. George. • In1590 it becomes a mosque of Suleiman HortatziEfent. • It is famous for its mosaic decoration of the dome.
The Walls of Thessaloniki • It’s a complex of walls, towers and fortifications. • They are similar to the Byzantine Walls of Constantinople • Built mainly in 4th century A.D., fortified in 6th and 7th centuries due to attacks.
