Facts! • On average, a drunk driver will drive 80 times under the influence before their first arrest. • Kids and teens who get involved with alcohol at a young age are 7 times more likely to be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lives. • Every 53 minutes in America, a life is lost in a drunk driving crash; that equates to 27 people every day. • Thanks to law enforcement around driving under the influence, since 1980 the fatality rate of drunk driving has been cut in half.
Statistics! • 16-25 year olds constituted 13.7% of the population in 2009, but made up almost 31.1 % of the alcohol-related traffic deaths. • In 2011, 9,878 people were victims of drunk drivers. • Between 50 and 75 percent of the people who have had their licenses revoked due to driving under the influence drive illegally without their license. • 211 children were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2010. Of those 211 children, 62 percent were riding in the car with the impaired driver.
Characteristics of the Drinking and Driving Problem Among Youth • •Older Teens: Of all the young drinking drivers who are killed or seriously injured, the smallest proportion is 16 years of age. The largest proportion is 19 years of age. • •Males: Account for 87% of the young fatally injured drinking drivers and 89% of the seriously injured drinking drivers. • •Summertime: Young drinking drivers are most likely to be killed or injured in the summer (32.4% and 40.8% respectively) and least likely to be killed or injured in the winter (8% and 11.4% respectively). • •Weekend: A large percentage of young drinking drivers die or are seriously injured on the weekend. • •Night time: The vast majority of young drinking drivers die or are seriously injured in crashes at night. • •Automobiles: Most young drinking drivers are killed or seriously injured when driving an automobile. • •Single-vehicle: Young drinking drivers are most likely to be involved in single-vehicle crashes. • •At fault: In nearly two-thirds of the alcohol-related multiple vehicle crashes, it was the fatally injured teen driver who had been drinking and not the other drivers. • •Crashes: By the time a driver reaches a blood alcohol content of .10%, he or she is 51 times more likely than a non-drinking driver to be involved in a fatal crash.
If and when you get caught while driving drunk… • •For a first conviction, there is a minimum fine of $600, in addition to a 12 month license suspension and a further 12 months of being required to use an ignition interlock device. An ignition interlock device is a device mounted near the ignition of your car which requires you to provide a breath sample to start the car and then another breath sample at periodic intervals while the car is in operation. The goal of the device is to physically prevent you from operating the vehicle while you are under the influence of alcohol. • •For a second conviction, you’ll face a minimum of 14 days in jail, as well as a 3 year license suspension and two further years of requiring an ignition interlock device to drive. • •For a third or subsequent conviction, the penalty is a minimum of 90 days in jail, and a lifetime driving suspension which you can apply for reinstatement after 10 years if you choose.
