What was it? • Influenza of 1918, Spanish flu, was an pandemic that spread across the globe • 3/1918 - 6/1920, to the Arctic & remote Pacific Islands
Cause • Unusually infectious & deadly influenza A virus strain called H1N1 • No clear origin
Outbreak • Fort Riley, KS on 3/4/1918 • Queens, NY, on 3/11/1918
Outbreak • Called Spanish Flu, received more attention after it moved from France - Spain • Spain was neutral
Outbreak • Close troop quarters & troop movements transmission
Outbreak • Virus helped tip the balance of power towards the Allies • Hit the Central Powers 1st, mortality rates in Germany & Austria were high

Symptoms • Huge death toll= high infection rate of 50%, & symptoms • Bleeding= nose, stomach, ears • Lesions, blue tint, & coughing up blood caused by obstruction of the lungs .
