A LOST GENERATION Numbers 13-14
Lost! • An emotional word. • “Amber Alert”. • Luke 15 – Lost sheep, coin, son • Numbers – not the “younger” generation. They entered the promised land. Their parents and grandparents.
Review of History • Egyptian slavery. • 10 Plagues, including passover. • The Red Sea. • Sinai and Tabernacle. • Now! The promised land!!
The “Committee” of Spies • The majority report – Num. 13:31-32 • The minority report – Num. 13:30 • Why the different reports? Both agreed on the quality of the land. Both agreed on the difficulties. • One group saw God, the other didn’t. • Phil. 4:13; Heb. 13:6.
Why This Generation Was Lost • 1. They were satisfied with the majority report. Ex. 23:2. • Noah was in the minority. Elijah and the prophets of Baal. Barabbas got more votes than Jesus for freedom. • 2. They magnified their difficulties. They saw overwhelming enemies. Hardship and trial. • Paul and his “thorn” 2 Cor. 12:9; Rom. 8:31
3. They didn’t respect their abilities. “We are grasshoppers in our own sight.” • Over 600,000 warriors. WITH GOD! Being humble doesn’t mean selling ourselves short. Rom. 12:3-4 • 4. They murmured and rebelled. Constant whining and bickering, with NO constructive ideas
5. They looked back; not forward. Lessons are learned from the past. Life isn’t lived there, but in present with future plans. • Luke 9:62; Col. 3:1-2; Luke 17:32. Look to your “promised land.” • 6. Unwilling to pay the price. “Cheap” land may be worth little. “You get what you pay for.” • Luke 9:23
What Do WE Learn? • It’s sad that this generation of witnesses was lost. But this history is there for our benefit. • Heb. 3:12-4:2 • Put your faith in God. • Get on with the work. • He will take care of the victory.
