First Hour Writing Assignment Revision Strategy Work on your Piece
#1) Prose Writing Assignment – “I Disagree” • Think of a commonly held belief or a frequent practice of others … • The existence of soul mates • Love at first sight • Taking pictures of your food to post on facebook • Cutting in line • Use of emoticons • Or others …
Even if you agree with the practice/belief, write an argument against it. • First outline your response, including a thesis statement • If you have chosen the right topic, you should be able to write at least 4 paragraphs
Sample Outline • Thesis: • Why do you disagree with it? • What are 2-3 of your points? • Body Paragraph #1 Topic: • Body Paragraph #2 Topic: • Optional Body Paragraph #3 Topic: • Conclusion (restatement of intro/thesis)
#2) Zinsser & Feedback • While I circulate around the room to give you feedback on today’s writing assignment do the following assignment. • Read the chapter called “The Transaction” from On Writing Well by William Zinsser. • Answer the two questions below: • What is the “right” way of writing? • What are the two most important qualities in writing that the book will “go in search of”? Why do you think they are important?
Second Hour Program Spotlight: File Folders Program practice – Garage Band
Organizing your files • Be sure to organize your file folders on your flash drive/digital dropbox. • Name files appropriately • Give the file a name that you will understand later • Save drafts as completely different files with dates in the titles • For complex projects, create a folder solely for that project to make it easier to find things. • Save everything – even short writing exercises!
Garage Band Practice • Take the two poems given to you and read them at your own pace.
Third hour Workshop
Polishing your pieces • Choose one piece to revise and rewrite. • I will be going around to give you feedback on the piece.
