Explore the concept of functions in mathematics and relationships between boys and girls. Learn the definition of a function both mathematically and from a girl's perspective. Understand why boys can't cheat in functions while girls can, depicted through examples and graph illustrations. Discover the Vertical Line Test to determine if a graph represents a function. Practice identifying functions with various sets of x and y values.

Conjunction Junction What’s YourFunction? Functions at their finest…
What is a Function?(Mathematically speaking…) • A function is a one-to-one correspondence • For every x, there is a unique value for y
What is a Function?(From a Girl’s point of view…) • X can only have one Y value • X (boys) can only have one Y (girlfriend) • For instance • X 0 2 3 6 7 • Y 1 4 6 3 8
Why boys can’t “cheat”… • Boys are not allowed to “cheat” on girls (x can only have one y) • This is illegal • X 0 3 3 6 7 • Y 1 4 6 3 8 • The same boy (x) has two different girls (y).
Why girls can “cheat”… • Y (girls) can have more than one X (boys) • This is legal • X 0 1 -12 -2 • Y 0 1 14 4 • The same girl (Y) has two different boys (X)
Vertical Line Test • If you draw vertical lines through the graph and the line only crosses the graph once, it IS a function. • If you draw vertical lines through the graph and the line crosses the graph more than once, it is NOT a function.
Let’s Practice! Is it a function? • X 0 1 3 6 8 1 • Y 6 7 5 6 5 2 • Why or why not???
