  1. FORCES CIRCUS “Roll up roll up”…….. • You are going to carry out a lab to investigate the forces in a circus. You will carry out a number of activities and investigate which forces are involved and what happens if they are not balanced.

  2. Activities • Tug Lean of War • Plate spinning • Tight rope walking • Hula hooping

  3. In your notebook…. • Activity title e.g. tug of war • Record data / answer questions • Diagrams using arrows to show the direction of the forces • A sentence explaining the balanced and unbalanced forces involved in the activity

  4. Tug Lean of war • Boys vs. girls • Taller vs shorter or Older vs. younger • Equal random distribution of students DRAW A DIAGRAM FOR EACH SCENARIO Questions: • What did you see with each set? • (winner, time to win) • Who had the advantage? Why? • How do you make it balanced?

  5. Plate spinning Spin the ball or a plate on the point of your finger or a pencil. DRAW A DIAGRAM Questions: • How long can you do this for? • What did you have to do to keep it spinning? • Does it matter where you put the pencil? Explain.

  6. Tight rope walking Write down the TIME it takes walking WITHOUT FALLING in the following ways: a) with your arms tight by your side (no diagram) b) arms held out for balance (DIAGRAM) c) carrying a heavy bag on one side (DIAGRAM) Questions: • What do you notice about the times? • What did you do when you had the heavy bag? • What affects the balance most?

  7. Hula hooping Part 1-with just one push and no moving- DIAGRAM • What’s the most number you can spin? • How long does the spin last? Part 2- try to hula hoop like normal- DIAGRAM • How many times can you spin the hoop in 1 min? • How long can you make it spin for? • What do you have to do to make it spin well? In class: • What force is involved in the hoop spinning? • How do you balance it?

  8. Conclusion • In this lab you were looking at balanced and unbalanced forces. • Write a paragraph explaining what you found out about ‘what a force is’ and what happens when they are balanced and unbalanced.
