3. School of Law & Political Science School of Law and Political Science was formerly the Research Institute for Law of the Sea established in 1980. In 1998, the School was officially founded and became a key academic unit in liberal arts, which enjoys a strong support from the university. Marine and environment are the two features of the School. • Many nationally famous professors and vibrant young teachers with doctoral degrees.. • Hold over 30 important national level projects and actively participated in some UNDP, UNEP programs • Cooperative relations with universities and research institutions in 12 different countries. • Provided consultation for many important legislations and policies, including the Marine Environment Protection Law of PRC, the Island Protection Law of PRC. • 3 departments: Department of Law, Department of Political Science and Department of Public Administration. • 9 master degree programs and 1 doctoral degree program in environmental law. • 7 research institutes: the Institute for Law of the Sea, the Institute for Environmental Law and Sustainable Development, the Institute for International Political Science, the Sino-Australian Joint Research Center for Coastal Zone Management, the Institute for Sociology, the Institute for Political and Legal Issue in Arctic Area, and the Institute for Law of Insurance.

Master Program in Environmental Law (MPEL) Ocean University of China School of Law & Political Science was one of the first law schools in the country to develop a comprehensive and integrated curriculum in environmental law. More than 350 students have graduated from our master program and doctoral program of judicial science in environmental law. They are now environmental leaders in government, nonprofits, corporations, and private practice—locally, nationally, and internationally. In order to provide an opportunity for international students to understand environmental challenges and study environmental law in China, the School is launching a new master program in environmental law for international students with a strong future professional or academic interest in the environment. The MPEL will provide students with knowledge on basic theory of environmental law, environmental legislation and policy in China and other countries. Why to Choose MPEL? • The courses are taught by the full time faculty and adjunct professors from across the country and around the world. • Students will work closely with faculty on research projects and to participate in the environmental protection activities launched by WWF(Worldwide Fund for Nature)—China. Students can also participate in the editing work of China’s Environmental and Natural Resources Law Review and activities in the Environmental Law Society. • Our environmental law program prepares decision makers and lawyers to address the scientific, economic and political forces that shape environmental law • Students will have an opportunity to look at the environmental challenges in China who will for sure play a more and more important role in the development of environmental law.
