This email provides information on the recent upgrades to the email system, including new hardware, anti-virus/phish filtering, spam filtering improvements, and GopherMail updates. It also includes contact information for technical coordinators for any inquiries.

New Hardware • 3 Sun T5240 servers • 2 CPUs w/ 64 threads each • Additional IMAP/POP service capacity • 1 Sun X4500 server • 48TB raw capacity • To mirror current archive storage used for infrequently used e-mail folders
Anti-Virus/Phish Filtering • ClamAV filtering in place since 5/6 for all central e-mail • NAI filtering to be shut off 7/1
Spam Filtering • SpamAssassin 3.2.4 installed 5/20 • Fixed to properly detect end of message • Investigating: • Wider use of SA for detection of spear phishing • Making SA opt-out instead of opt-in • Improving spam reporting methods
GopherMail Update • UTF-8 (International character set) support • New “web service” API allowing an application to populate an iframe or similar (unsupported until late summer) • Apache-like virtual host capability • Folder sidebar • Optional Javascript panes for preferences, advanced search, adding contacts • Per-user/session mobile and accessible "meta-views", separate from themes • Paging view replaced with Recent, Unread, and All views (emphasize Search)
Gophermail Update (cont) • Trash model option for message deletion • Role selection on compose screen • List screen message deletion via button rather than dropdown • Folders page: directory contents expanded on current page instead of a new page • Folders page: creating subfolders can now be done from an explicit widget under each directory • Message list, message display, and Contacts screens now have a fixed header and individually scrolling sidebar • Toolbar search inset: replaced "To" with "Recipients" to also search “Cc” field
GopherMail Update (cont) • Beta starting 6/16 with email inviting Email-l users and helpline • One week later general community invited to beta test
Bits ‘n’ Bytes • Autoreply alias support added 6/9 • Aphelion LDAP directory updated to latest supported version 6/9 • Phasing out CRAM-MD5 authentication method soon
