  1. Credit Recovery and Accrual David Patteson, Credit Recovery/Accrual Teacher Julia Cunningham, Credit Recovery/Accrual Administrator

  2. Online Learning at Freeman • The Credit Recovery and Accrual Program at Freeman is a unique learning opportunity for students who have demonstrated a need for a different learning environment from what is offered in the traditional classroom setting. • E2020 “Education 2020” software combines a variety of instructional strategies and activities that address the unique learning styles of all students • The following courses are available for CR/CA at Freeman: • English 9-12, Algebra I, Geometry, Earth Science, Biology I, Chemistry, Physics, World History I, VA/US History, VA/US Government

  3. Benefits of Online Learning • Accessibility • Students may work from home, library, or anywhere with wireless interface connection (WIFI). • Independence • Pacing • Ability to work ahead, finish early • Embedded Calendar • Will not advance until mastery is demonstrated • Communication • Email and chat access to teacher and administrator • Parents receive weekly reports

  4. Credit Recovery Credit Recovery is an option for students who have taken a year-long course and did not pass during a previous school year or summer school. • VDOE Seat time requirement • Prescriptive testing at the beginning of the course • Pretesting throughout the course (with the exception of English classes) Students are allowed the Credit Recovery option during ONE year of high school. If a student has taken a Credit Recovery course, he or she is not a candidate for Credit Accrual**

  5. Credit Accrual • Credit Accrual is an option for students who have not previously taken a course, but need to earn the credit for the course within the current school year • To get ahead • As a Second Semester Student • Students beginning before the end of first semester • No prescriptive testing/no pretesting • VDOE seat time requirement • One year of content • Students beginning 2/1/11 or later • Semester 1 – prescriptive testing will determine end date for SEM 1 coursework • Semester 2 – 18 weeks of coursework, no prescriptive testing

  6. Prescriptive VS Pretesting • Prescriptive test • First day of class • Results determine the coursework needed for mastery • Student is able to “test out” of content • Not an option for Credit Accrual students who began before 2/1/11 • All Credit Recovery students complete a prescriptive test • Help!: “What does a 43% on the prescriptive test mean?” • Pretest • Students are able to take these tests to bypass small portions of the content (units, etc) • Not an option for CA students prior to 2/1/11

  7. Intervention • The online program will prevent students from advancing if they have not mastered previous material. • The teacher will provide whatever assistance is most beneficial to the student to help him or her master the material. • Students who fall behind may be required to attend before or after-school tutoring in order to receive help in with the specific area of difficulty • Students may be assigned additional activities from a textbook or online resource as needed.

  8. Time Commitment • Students must work during school hours as well as at home. It is recommended that students spend at least 3 hours/week working on their coursework outside of school. Internet access is available at the public library as well as various restaurants in the area. • It’s not just time, its QUALITY TIME!!! • At least 1 unit test/week • Study Block – 25 minutes/day • Study Hall – 45 minutes/day

  9. Contract • Come to every CR/CA class on time and ready to work • Bring computer and charger daily • HELP!: “My computer isn’t working, what do I do?” • Demonstrate consistent progress • 2 consecutive weeks behind in pacing = probation and plan • 3 consecutive weeks behind in pacing = schedule change • All coursework is to be independent • Testing procedure • Attend required tutoring • Maintain passing grades in other courses • Conduct yourself in a respectful manner and follow the HCPS Code of Student Conduct at all times

  10. Grounds for Removal • Poor Attendance • Lack of Progress • Class preparedness • Behavior (in ALL classes) • Integrity/Technology Violations

  11. SOL End of Course Tests • Students enrolled in Credit Recovery or Accrual courses that have SOL End of Course tests will take the SOL test if they have not already done so and passed. • Students will take the SOL test during the earliest testing window possible after course completion.

  12. E2020 Reports GRADES FOR CR/CA COURSES ARE NOT INCLUDED ON INTERIM OR MARKING PERIOD REPORT CARDS!! • Bi-weekly individual report via email to parents • Students can check their progress at any time • Calendar Feature • Attendance (Monitors time spent on the program) • What if I don’t have an email address? • Most important information on Progress report: • Course Completed Percentage • Actual Grade • Pacing Status
