Increase social acceptance: Find out why certain sports are less popular among gays and why gays are less likely to reveal their (gay) identity Open the issue up for discussion Increase visibility of gay athletes Take action against unacceptable behaviour Goal So: Simply be gay, in sport as well!
Actions • Contribute to coordinated activities e.g. agenda setting, harmonisation, monitoring • Network for gay athletescontribute to network and obtain info from network for policy improvements • Sport management courses within federationsincorporate theme in existing courses run by federations • Master plan for referees/umpirescall in the help of referees/umpires to combat undesirable behaviour and offer support to referees/umpires in dealing with (their own) homosexuality
Actions (2) • The assertive athlete (bullying and intimidation)increase expertise and alertness of counsellors/advisors • Sportsmanship and Respectincorporate in lots of activities that promote sportsmanship and respect • Meedoen Allochtone Jeugd door Sportembed in diversity policy within these clubs and accompanying courses for managers • Sport specific actions per federationexamples: extra attention for gay sports clubs; code of conduct; football campaign; etc.
The challenge • Change in culture • Difficult to make tangible at club level • Will only work through collaboration inside and outside the world of sport We can make the difference!
