What is sustainability all about? How have attitudes and our needs changed?
Sustainability ‘Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’ Our Common Future, World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission) 1987. OR The concept of ‘sustainability’ proposes a balance between biophysical, economic, social and political systems in development. (Fien 2001) OR Enough – for all forever African Delegate to Johannesburg (Rio+10) - 2002

The emerging opportunities for Vocational Education and Training ‘The development of practical skills which promote sustainability in the workplace will be vital for employers of the future and for the wider community…’ • Vocational education and training allow the integration sustainability into vocational education and training. • Education through action learning, group learning and problem-solving. http://www.ncver.edu.au/publications/1718.html NCVER Report World wide, education is regarded as the key to changing behaviour
The Role sustainability in VET • Embed sustainable units in VET policy, practice and Training Packages • Utilise customisation guidelines within Training Packages to utilise sustainable units .
Industry Skills Councils’ Response • Industry specific – environmental sustainability must be approached in a manner that is specific to the needs of the job and industry within which the employee works. • Appropriately timed – environmental sustainability skill needs will emerge in an incremental way at different rates from industry to industry. • Adds value - workforce skill requirements to support environmental sustainability objectives must be carefully assessed to determine the need for new skills and the appropriateness of existing skills. Environmental Sustainability: An Industry Response May 2009
Greening Existing Units – e.g. Drive Light Rigid Vehicle Element 1 Drive the light rigid vehicle 1.1 The light rigid vehicle is started, steered, manouvered, positioned and stopped in accordance with traffic regulations and manufacturers instructions 1.2 Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency and performance and to minimise engine and transmission damage 1.3 Driving hazards are identified and/or anticipated and avoided or controlled through defensive driving 1.4 The light rigid vehicle is driven in reverse, maintaining visibility and achieving accurate positioning 1.5 The light rigid vehicle is parked, shut down and secured in accordance with manufacturers specifications, traffic regulations and workplace procedures 1.6 Appropriate procedures are followed in the event of a driving emergency Element 2 Monitor traffic and road conditions 2.1 The most efficient route of travel is taken through monitoring and anticipation of traffic flows and conditions, road standards and other factors likely to cause delays or route deviations
Introducing new industry specific green units • Introducing industry specific units at qualification level that address the following: • Prepare for environmentally sustainable work practices • Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices • Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices • Develop workplace policy and procedures for sustainability
Incorporating environmental sustainability in qualifications’ ‘employability skills’
Industry Examples in Transport and Logistics • TNT has recently purchased 30 hybrid vehicles. Efficiencies are monitored to demonstrate return on investment, thereby justifying purchases. Environmental sustainability is reinforced by via staff training and changing driving culture – new vehicles are issued to drivers who perform well as a reward for applying eco-efficient driving practices. • As part of Wettenhalls commitment to ‘Keep Moving Forward’, they have developed their own rigorous environmental strategy, which identifies key issues and opportunities across the entire Group. The purchase of an LNG powered truck is an example of this strategy. • In attempt to reduce their impact on the environment, TOLL IPEC is turning its attention to alternative fuels that will reduce carbon emissions. TOLL IPEC vehicles are progressively being upgraded to Euro 4 standards that meet strict environmental standards. Understanding the difference between pollutants and carbon emissions, TOLL IPEC use ‘blue clean emissions’ but are also experimenting with electric energy sources and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
Industry Examples in Transport and Logistics • Linfox have a ‘Greenfox’ policy • Electricity savings: Linfox conducted electricity audits at 116 sites • Supply chain optimisation: examined their supply chain to find ways to reduce carbon emissions. • Aerodynamic vehicle design: develop aerodynamic features for vehicles and road transport equipment • Eco driving: driver training program that teaches ten eco-driving key techniques • Other initiatives: improved tyre technology, improved vehicle use, creating a green workplace culture, and the 25C Project. • http://www.linfox.com/Environment/What-we-are-doing.aspx

Sustainable Water Systems • Focus on efficiency improvements and alternative treatment technologies in urban and rural environments. • The waster industry employs about 125,000 people in Australia and is valued at $18 billion. But less than 20% is focused on sustainable water efficiency systems. • Potentially 66,000 jobs in Australian companies will service this activity by 2030.
