  3. Junior Quiz • Why is it important to take the PSAT? • How many credits are required to graduate from CDO HS? • Are graduation requirements the same as university admission requirements? • What is the ASVAB?

  5. Get to know your counselor! • It is important to know your counselor for: college applications, scholarships, letters of recommendation, career/education planning etc. • Make an appointment to see your counselor. See Mrs. Henkel in Counseling. • Send your counselor an email and introduce yourself.

  6. Testing • SAT/SAT II, ACT- Take this in the spring. • PSAT- Test is Oct 18th, sign up by Oct 10th in the CDO Bookstore ($25.00). • ASVAB- Nov 13th- if you are interested in this test, please come and sign up in the counseling office.

  7. SAT Vs. ACT • All 3 schools take either. • SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. • You do get penalized some for guessing, so if you are going to guess, guess wisely. • The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. • You do not get penalized for guessing. SO GUESS!

  8. ASVAB • Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. • A career planning tool that combines a multiple-aptitude test with an interest self-assessment and a wide range of career exploration tools. • This test is FREE!

  9. AIMS • If you need to take the AIMS or retake a portion of the test in order to “meet,” and or “Exceed” you should be notified during the week of Oct. 20th where you will be testing. • If you are not notified and know that you need to test, please see Mrs. Hutcherson in Admin.

  10. Junior /Senior Handbook • This years updated Jr/Sr handbook is posted on the counseling website • The handbook contains valuable information on the following topics: • College planning, scholarships & financial aid, choosing a college, college applications, transcript requests and much more…

  11. Graduate from CDO • 22 credits to graduate. • 4 years of Math • 3 years of Science • 4 years of English • 1 year of US/AZ History • 1 year of World History • 1 year Econ/American Gov or equivalent • 1.5 PE • 1 year fine art or CTE • 5.5 elective credits

  12. In-State College Requirements • WATCH OUT!!!!! They are different than CDO graduation requirements. • You need to choose 2 years of a foreign language and a fine art! • The terminology is “16 core credits”

  14. College Fairs • National College Fair- Sept 28th 11:00-3:00 pm at Phoenix Convention center • Tucson College Night- Sept 30th 6:30-8:30 pm at the TCC • Christian College Fair- Oct 23rd 6:00-8:00 pm at Pusch Ridge Christian

  15. College Reps Visiting CDO • Many college representatives will visit CDO this year. • How do you know when they will be here? • Listen to announcements in the morning. • You can view the calendar posted in window of the counseling office. • Parent Newsletter • Check our web page

  16. College Visits • If there are colleges that you are interested, try to visit them. • Remember to ask questions on your visit. • Many college web pages have virtual tours

  17. Scholarships • Counseling office posts a “Scholarship Board” on our web page • Updated regularly and arranged by due date • Scholarship links and general information can also be found on our web page • Financial Aid Night Nov 19th -6:00 pm in the cafe

  18. Internet/Email Smarts When applying to college or to a job, make sure that you have a professional email address. • Professional Ex.- JohnDoe@hotmail.com • Not Professional- Butterflyluvrgirl@hotmail.com

  19. Be Careful What You Post! • Be careful what you post on social networks and online. • People have lost jobs because of Facebook! • “In just the past few weeks, an emergency dispatcher was fired in Wisconsin for revealing drug use; a waitress got canned for complaining about customers and the Pittsburgh Pirate's mascot was dumped for bashing the team on Facebook.” Source: http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/110674/6-things-you-should-never-reveal-on-facebook • Even if your facebook page is locked your profile picture will still show up.

  20. ECAP REQUIRMENT • Every student must have a documented post high school plan (graduation requirement) • Use the AzCIS site to gather information and formulate your plan. • Each student must complete an ECAP card and show active participation on their AzCIS account

  21. ECAP CONTINUED • See handout for AzCIS log in instructions • Math, Science and Social Studies teachers will take 1 class period to allow students an opportunity to access their AzCIS account. You are encouraged to access your account independently.
