  1. Scorpion of the Hopi By Tanner Baker

  2. Long before the explorers walked this land, I watched as the Hopi people of the sand built their pueblo. I, the mighty scorpion teach them valuable lessons as they disobey the laws of the desert.

  3. Digging long, narrow ditches, my brother the water, feeds their crops which they cook. Quiet and sneaky, I watch atop a high mesa, as they perform their ancient ceremonies. My father the blazing sun, gives my people light during the day.

  4. Stealthily and quickly, my people the Hopi hunt rabbits armed with bows and arrows. Carefully and skillfully, women plant the three sisters beside the stream. Inside their baked, clay houses, the children with kachina dolls made from thick corn husks.

  5. Young men and women stretch drums made from skin of rabbit. During the graceful night, my mother the moon, provides light during the dark, vast night. Then the explorers came to our desert home. White skinned warriors with hard, rough skin like turtle looked for gold.

  6. I, the powerful scorpion, tried to protect my people from them, but even I could not stop these creatures. My people hide and cower as the white men took all our food and water we needed to live. Soon night falls and my mother, the moon sheds light sadly on the pueblo.

  7. Nothing has changed in the land of the Hopi. I, the mighty scorpion still watch over the Hopi, people of the sand, as they make beautiful, unbreakable pottery. Skillfully, the women weave soft, brightly colored blankets for their children.

  8. The Hopi still follow many techniques from my uncle, the past. Irrigating cotton and the three sisters, my people grow strong in the desert.

  9. Peace has been made between with the people with skin as light as the moon. Predicting skillfully, I see the Hopi still using their native language. Many traditions of my people will be followed at pow wow.

  10. I, the mighty scorpion still watch over them, as they learn to respect the white men’s ways. This is the legend of the Hopi tribe, people of the sand, my people.
