Hopi Creation Myth • The world was at first just endless space and the creator Taiowa. Taiowa created Sotuknang and he created the nine planets. Sotuknang gathered matter from the endless space to make these nine worlds. The creator then orders Sotuknang to gather the waters from the space and put them on the planets. Next Sotuknang gathered air to create winds and breezes. Sotuknang’s next order was to create life, so Sotuknang created the spider woman. The spider woman was then faced with the task to create people, animals and plants. The spider woman gathered dirt and spit to create two humans, named Poqanghoya and Poqanghoya. They were both sent out to the poles of the earth to keep them spinning. She then created more humans, black, red, yellow, and red.
