  2. CAUGHT FLATFOOTED • Raging Sea of fire the few had ever witnessed. • Twenty rocket engines clustered in the tail of the 100-foot beast quickly built to full thrust. • Incandescent gasses licked into the black night sky. • The world’s first artificial earth satellite—Sputnik!

  3. Russian News • On October 4th, 1957, the first artificial Earth satellite was successfully launched by the USSR. The Soviet Union proposes to launch more artificial satellites in the course of the international Geophysical Year. The Sputniks will be larger and a broad range scientific experiments will be carried on them.”
