ICIT-TRF NATIONAL R&D INSTITUTE FOR CRYOGENICS AND ISOTOPES TECHNOLOGIES ASSIGNMENT OF WORK TO THE GROUPS KIT - ISS Engineering & Design ICIT - WDS Engineering & Design ENEA - HAZOP & RAMI Studies CEA - Licensing & associated QA The main duty of the ISS Engineering & Design Group is to characterize the specific ITER ISS components at ITER relevant scale, to develop the hardware and soft systems in order to control the tritium inventory and to provide the deuterium and tritium streams at the required levels. The group in charge with the development and design of the ITER WDS shall comply with the ITER new identified throughput and to provide the required decontamination factor, tacking into account the various isotopic compositions that can be built, during long term operation. The group in charge of HAZOP & RAMI Studies, required by the client, must assist in defining a safe system design and acceptance criteria for equipment that is wetted by tritium. The group in charge with Licensing & Associated QA cordinate and monitoring the Quality Assurance (QA) activity inside the overall Project and the safety and licensing related activities inside the Project MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION S BRAD, ASSOCIATION DAYS, 26-27.11.2009 ASSOCIATION EURATOM – MEdC

ICIT-TRF NATIONAL R&D INSTITUTE FOR CRYOGENICS AND ISOTOPES TECHNOLOGIES MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION S BRAD, ASSOCIATION DAYS, 26-27.11.2009 ASSOCIATION EURATOM – MEdC ITER WDS For ITER, the WDS is one of the key systems to control the tritium content in the effluent streams, to recover as much tritium as possible and consequently to minimize the impact to the environment. The most suitable process for water detritiation is the CECE process, a combination of electrolysis and catalytic exchange of hydrogen isotopes in a Liquid Phase Catalytic Exchange (LPCE) column. The separation duty of the CECE process for fusion reactors is very high (tritium concentration in the released H2 from the WDS for ITER shall be < 700 Bqm-3 air at a typical activity of tritium in the water feed of 370 GBqm-3). ITER ISS The Isotope Separation System (ISS) envisaged to be used in ITER consists of a cascade of four cryogenic distillation columns with the aim to process a gas stream from the Vacuum Vessel via the Tokamak Exhaust Processing (TEP) system and a second one from the Water Detritiation System mixed with the return stream from the Neutral Beam Injectors. The ISS has to supply five streams with various tritium, deuterium and hydrogen composition. The top product of a CD column from ITER-ISS (CD1 column) has to be almost tritium free to be discharged into the environment, which is one of the main concerns from the licensing point of view.
ICIT-TRF NATIONAL R&D INSTITUTE FOR CRYOGENICS AND ISOTOPES TECHNOLOGIES KIT, ICIT and ENEA, in the frame of the Consortium Tri-Pla-CA, jointly prepared and submitted an offer, answering to the ITER call for tender C4T/09/90/PMT - PRI0001338 – “Development of method for highly tritiated water handling in ITER Tritium Plant. Phase 1”. ( deadline 22.10.2009 ) The work to be perform – assessment of the methods for handling of highly tritiated water (HTW) which will be produced in some operational cases at ITER Tritium Plant The consortium evaluate a possible contribution to the Design Working Order that has been released by ITER aiming on "Tritium accountancy and tracking for inputs to RPrS“. The purpose of this work is to provide an updated concept of ANS and inputs to RPrS on tritium accountancy and tracking. The consortium estimated the costs for the ISS, WDS and ANS ITER systems.
