Value of Participating in Program Standards and Mentorship Program July 08, 2014 Pieter A. Sheehan, REHS County of Fairfax Department of Health
Mentorship Program Benefits • Access to a support system of other LHDs during critical stages of navigating Program Standards; • Identification and sharing of additional resources and tools; • Encourages local, state, and federal interactions to improve the LHD’s food safety program; • Provides an insider’s perspective on how to meet a Program Standard(s); • Exposure to diverse perspectives and experiences of other LHDs.
Lesson Learned • Understand early what each mentee-LHD needs to succeed; • Small county and big county differences in dealing with needs. • Variability in LHD environmental health programs nationwide. • Be realistic on time commitment; • One hour conference calls are too short. • As time allows, discuss other Standards not in mentee-LHD work plans; • Standards should not be presented in a one-size-fits-all approach.
