  4. Elephantiasis • Relatively uncommon late complication of filariasis • Death of worms causes calcification and obstruction • Recurrent secondary bacterial and fungal infections play a very important role

An infection of children 1 million children infected each year Children become infected when very young but usually appear healthy The latency period is long: visible symptoms present in puberty Diagnostic tools can detect early infection Of all LF sufferers, children will benefit most from the elimination programme
