  1. How to set-up yourScience Notebook

  2. Start with a composition notebook. These can be found at Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, Target, Walmart, CVS, etc.

  3. and are available in many different colors and designs. The cardboard covers works best for our needs.

  4. You also need . . . • Scissors • Glue - remember to dot, dot, dot! ( glue works better long term than a glue stick )

  5. and . . . . . the packet of papers . You can find links on my HMS webpage http://www.gcisd-k12.org//Domain/1209that you should print to complete your notebook.

  6. The requirements are: 1. Your Name (first and last) 2. Class Period (EX: Period 1) 3. a picture of yourself (no pictures with family or friends) 4. Let the cover reflect who you are! 5. Use extreme neatness! STEP #1 You must decorate the FRONTcover of your Science Journal.

  7. Step #2INSIDE the front cover. Safety is very important in a lab. You will put a list of general rules here to be easily seen as a frequent reminder. Take the sheet labeled “SAFETY RULES”. Color those words to attract your attention! Now cut these rules out along the dotted lines and carefully glue on the INSIDE cover of your journal.

  8. Step #3Journal Pages First, you will set up the next 6 page (3 fronts and 3 backs) as the Table of Contents Next, give the top line of each page the title: Table of Contents Please SKIP a line and make column headings on each page to look like this: Date Activity Page

  9. Step #4close your journal and flip over to the BACK cover Get the half page that is titled . . . “SMART Phrases for Science Write-Ups” Glue this to the center of the back cover. This will be a good resource for you during the year when working on a lab write-up.

  10. Step #5INSIDE theBACKcover We will create a place for you to store unit tests during the semester so you will have great place to store papers you are working on. We will create this page in class! Bring the sheet titled classroom procedures with you to complete Step #5.

  11. Step #6The last page of the journal(we’re working back to front now.) Take the sheet titled “Common Equipment in the Laboratory” and lay it flat on the surface in front of you so that the title is at the top. Now, take the bottom of the paper and bend it toward the top until it touches just below the title. Crease the rolled edge. Place glue on the back of the larger side of the paper. Place this paper onto the last page of your journal (right before the inside of the back cover.) You should be able to easily see the TITLE to provide a quick reference about what pieces of equipment look like.

  12. Step #7the next page Cut down the edges and across the bottom of the sheet called “Scientific Write-Up Guide”. Glue this here! This can be a good place to check your work or jog your memory about the proper way to do a Lab Write-Up.

  13. Step #8 Close your composition book. Look at your notebook from the side. You should see PAPER EDGES. This is the place to write your first and last name. Do this on each of the 3 paper edges of the journal. This little trick makes finding your journal quick and easy when it has found its way into a pile!

  14. You have completed your AT HOME part of setting up your Science Notebook. Have your work completed by Wednesday so we can complete your books in class and be ready to tackle Science.
