Peacemaker Project • Program Summary • Health and safety at daily recesses • Train students in conflict resolution, teamwork, positive role modeling • Employability skills
Problems Addressed • Mandated employability skills • Declining state funding • Reduce discipline referrals on playground and lunchroom
Uniqueness • All elementary students in one wing • Give leadership roles to older students • Improves “climate” of school
The Peacemaker Process • 4th, 5th graders trained first week of school • Watch over younger children at lunch and recess • Divide peacemaker teams into groups of 4 or 5 – mix of boys and girls • Box of vests moves from room to room with schedule • Train students in positive role modeling, conflict resolution, and playground safety
Peacemaker Process continued • Begin with team building • Sensitivity to younger students • Reiterate playground rules • Always taught to say: “STOP, you are breaking the rule” • Never use physical force • Get adult when violence or safety issues arise
Program Impact • 57% decline in discipline referrals on playground and lunchroom since 1999 • “Behavior-problem type children” flourish in peacemaker role • 100% participation by 4th, 5th grade students • Used peacemaker job as part of IEPS • See children actively participating in activity to demonstrate and evaluate employability skills
Resources Used • Training done by in-house personnel • Classroom teacher help with scheduling • Orange Vests ($10 each) • Pizza and treats • Costs: $50.00 annually – Vests $100.00 annually – Treats $150.00 TOTAL
