Tidal volume and peak flow • What is tidal volume? • What factors affect tidal volume? • How is tidal volume measured? • What is peak flow? • How is peak flow measured? • What is peak flow used to indicate?
What is tidal volume? • Tidal volume is the volume of air breathed in OR out of the lungs in one normal breath
Questions • Are the lungs ever empty? • What evidence is there form the graph to support your answer? • Collect cut out • Answer the following: • 1. What is the persons vital capacity? • 2. What is the persons tidal volume? • 3. What is the persons residual volume?
What is peak flow? • Peak flow is the maximum rate at which air can be forced out of the lungs
How is peak flow measured? • Peak flow is measured using a peak flow meter
Measure your peak flow • Make sure the pointer is at ‘0’ • Take in a deep breath • Blow into the mouthpiece as hard and as fast as you can • Take the reading and record in the table • Repeat the process another two times • Your peak flow is the highest reading you take
What is peak flow used to detect? • Peak flow is used to diagnose asthma • People with asthma have a significantly lower peak flow reading than the average person • People with asthma or other lung conditions have narrower airways therefore have difficulty breathing • Asthma sufferers use inhalers to control their condition
