  1. National 4 Science Human Health Composition of air and breathing rate

  2. Composition of air and breathing rate • Learning intentions: • What is the composition of air? • What is breathing rate? • What factors affect breathing rate? • How is breathing rate measured?

  3. What is the composition of air? • Air is composed of: • 20% oxygen • 79% nitrogen • 0.04% carbon dioxide • The rest is made up of other gases • When we breath in we breath in air containing all of the gases above • When we breath out are the percentages the same?

  4. Experiment • Set up two boiling tubes following your teachers instructions • One to show the carbon dioxide present in breathed in air • The other to show the carbon dioxide in exhaled air • Compare the two tubes and write a conclusion

  5. Exhaled air • Exhaled air contains less oxygen because we have used it up to break down our food to make energy • Exhaled air has more carbon dioxide which is a product of the process we use to break down our food to make energy • Exhaled air contains the same percentage of nitrogen because it is a very unreactive gas which we do not use

  6. What is breathing rate? • Breathing rate is the number of breathes a person takes in one minute • One complete breath includes inhalation (breathing in) and exhalation (breathing out)

  7. What factors affect breathing rate? • Breathing rate can be affected by: • Age • younger people have a higher breathing rate because they are more active • Gender • Women have a slightly higher breathing rate than men • Fitness • The fitter the person is the lower their breathing rate • Health • The healthier the person is the lower their breathing rate

  8. Factors affecting breathing rate • What two lung conditions have an effect on breathing rate? • Asthma • Bronchitis • Both of these lung conditions raise your breathing rate

  9. How is breathing rate measured? • Measure your breathing rate before and after exercise

  10. How is breathing rate measured? • What effect does exercise have on breathing rate? • Exercise increases breathing rate • Why do we need to breath faster during and slightly after exercise? • We need more oxygen in our cells when we exercise to provide us with energy therefore we breath faster to provide it.

  11. Breathing rate and recovery time • Explain recovery time in terms of breathing rate • During recovery time after exercise breathing rate returns to normal

  12. Questions • Intermediate 1 Biology textbook • p46 questions 1 - 4
