Action Research: Internet Sources in Health Care Careers Programs Jami N. Nanassy PLS 3rd Learning Wilkes University March 8, 2014 Why did I do this?
MOTIVATION and ENGAGEMENT NET GENERATION INTERNET SITES (YES!) SLIDE SHARES – NOT BAD YOUTUBE – UH, MAKE THAT TEACHER TUBE IF YOUTUBE IS BLOCKED PROCEDURE DEMOS – RETURN DEMOS – NOW WE’RE DOING SOMETHING! TRADITIONAL • TEXTBOOK – READING ASSIGNMENT (BORING…) • LECTURE – (YAWN) • VIDEO – LIGHTS OUT, HEAD DOWN, ZZZ • PROCEDURE DEMOS – RETURN DEMOS – NOW WE’RE DOING SOMETHING!
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE GRADES NOCTI SCORES SKILLS EVALUATIONS NURSE AIDE EXAM
LEARNER PLAYS AN ACTIVE PART IN THE LEARNING • ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO ENGAGE THE LEARNER AND HELP THEM ORGANIZE MATERIAL IN MEANINGFUL WAYS • WEBQUESTS • PRACTICE AND REVIEW ACTIVITIES • RESEARCH • PROCEDURE DEMONSTRATIONS COGNITIVISM
DESIGN ACTIVITIES FOR DEEPER CONNECTIONS WITH THE MATERIAL • ONLY ABOUT A THIRD OF STUDENTS MAKE THESE DEEPER CONNECTIONS • IDENTIFY AND SUMMARIZE IDEAS FROM THE INTERNET • RELATE THESE TO IDEAS DISCUSSED IN CLASS OR HIGHLIGHTED IN TEXTBOOKS • REFORMULATE THE IDEAS IN THE STUDENT’S OWN WORDS Ellis, R. A., Goodyear, P. P., Bliuc, A. M., & Ellis, M. M. (2011). High School Students' Experiences of Learning through Research on the Internet. Journal Of Computer Assisted Learning, 27(6), 503-515. Model strategies Design activitiesDevelop skills for in depth approaches to learning and making sense of internet information Integrate this information with other sources like discussion or text book information.
TEACHER SURVEYS (26) ONLINE INTERVIEWS (2) FREQUENCY OF USING INTERNET SOURCES THE WAY IN WHICH THESE SOURCES ARE USED THE DESIGN OF THE ACTIVITY ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES WHICH OBJECTIVES – HOW THE SOURCES ARE USED IN LESSONS EFFECTS OF INTERNET USE ON STUDENT LEARNING, MOTIVATION, ENGAGEMENT, AND CONFIDENCE METHODOLOGY
ACTIVITIES WEB QUESTS RESEARCH QUIZ REVIEWS TERMINOLOGY PRACTICE ILLUSTRATION VIDEOS QUIZ REMEDIATION CLARIFY INFORMATION LESSON EXTENSION GUIDED TO WEBSITES AND ALLOWED TO EXPLORE TEACHERS INTERVIEWED
INTERVIEWED TEACHERS MAIN FOCUS INTRODUCE NEW MATERIAL RESEARCH ENHANCE MATERIAL STUDENT DEVELOPED PRESENTATIONS ACCESS MATERIAL AT HOME CREATE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS
ENGAGING AND MOTIVATING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND CONFIDENCE WITH MATERIAL ABOUT THE SAME OR SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN TRADITIONAL RESOURCES EFFECTS ON STUDENTS
ADVANTAGES STUDENTS Free so the instructor can purchase other needed items for student learning Video/pictures to supplement the lecture Can use these resources at home or any place internet is available Fosters independent learning, engagement, and motivation TEACHERS • No Cost • Helps all types of learners • Current Info • Availability • Positive student engagement/motivation for learning • Different perspective than traditional resources • Expands upon/explains info better than traditional resources • This is how students learn
DISADVANTAGES STUDENTS Easy to surf inappropriate sites Use of inaccurate information from nonreputable sites Replaces class discussion which is important for special education students Recent immigrants may not be familiar with technology Not all students have home access TEACHERS • Fear that sites will be discontinued • Internet may not work at school • Some sites are blocked at school • The amount of time it takes to find what is needed • Hard to keep track of all students and where they are on the internet
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A HEART ATTACK? CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT SIMULATIONS AND DEMONSTRATIONS
ENGAGE AND MOTIVATE Developing learning activities which ask students to develop a personal understanding of the objectives with the integration of high quality internet sources is what is needed for deeper learning. The types of assessment used should mirror the learning objectives and activities. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
