Bullying… • Is repeated and persistent unreasonable behaviour directed towards an employee or a group of employees. • Includes words and/or actions which makes others feel incompetent, ashamed, worthless, excluded, unwelcome, or unsafe.
Bullying includes • Name calling • Eye rolling • Raised eyebrows • Put-downs • Ignoring and excluding • Refusing to help or work with someone • Sighing
Bullying is a major issue in schools, workplaces, homes and over the internet. • Up to 40% of Canadians have experienced bullying. • According to studies, 21 to 46% of nurses have experienced or witnessed bullying.
Impact of bullying • Can affect the health of individuals, their co-workers, and their family. • Can result in symptoms such as burnout, increased stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, fatigue, absenteeism and physical injury. • Can reduce team communication, job satisfaction, motivation, morale and affect patient care.
Why does bullying happen? • Cut backs • Understaffing • Excessive workloads • Shift work & long hours • Fatigue, sleep deprivation • Lack of managerial support • Organizational changes (Wang et al. 2008)
