Lacey Act 1900 • Protects plants & wildlife • Creates civil & criminal penalties for violations • Prohibits trade of wildlife, fish, and plants that have been illegally removed, transported, or sold • Created because game species were threatened by commercial hunting • Today, it’s mainly used to prevent the spread of potentially dangerous non-native species • Unlawful to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, purchase in interstate or foreign commerce any plant in violation of the laws of the U.S., a State, an Indian tribe, or any foreign law that protects plants • Amended in 2008
