Lacey Act – 1900 • The Lacey Act was drafted in 1900 • Amendment years: 1969, 1981 (changed “willing” damage to “ knowing damage”),1988 and May 22, 2008, upon Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 expanding its protection to a larger range of plants/plant products. Lacey Act – Functions • Introduced into Congress by Rep.John F. Lacey, of Iowa. Signed into law by President William McKinley on May 25, 1900 • Protects both plants and wildlife due to creation of civil and criminal penalties for a variety of violations. Act prohibits trade in plants, wildlife, fish that have been illegally sold, taken, and/or transported. • Issues Affected: controlled and penalized the acts of illegal commercial hunting in the U.S. ; reduce the importation of non-native plant and animal species to protect local habitats; brought light on Gibson Guitars, which was using illegal wood. • Law enforced by: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Environmental Investigation Agency
