Kind of obvious—information about the labor market! • A labor market is whatever area people are willing to drive to for employment. • LMI includes information about: • Industries (what kind of companies) • Occupations (the jobs) • Wages (Show me the money!) • Employment and unemployment • It also includes sharing data produced by other agencies that helps in understanding the labor market… • Characteristics about the population (Census) • Career exploration (for students and re-starters) What is Labor Market Information (LMI)?
What do the people in front of you want to know about the labor market? What jobs are out there? What jobs will be out there in the future? What do jobs pay in this area? What kinds of companies are in this area? What are the biggest companies in this area?
LMI departments in all states collect employment by occupation (i.e. job title). The data (called Occupational Employment Statistics) comes from mandatory surveys to a sample of employers. It gives a picture of employment levels by occupation. What jobs are out there? Lower Savannah Nonmetro area: www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_4500004.htm
The SC Department of Commerce produces job forecasts (occupational projections) for the state and for the WIA areas. What jobs will be out there in the future? http://www.sconestop.org/analyzer/default.asp
Statewide 2008-2018 and WIA area 2006-2016 are currently available. Occupational Projections
The Occupational Employment Statistics survey also collects hourly and annual wage information by occupation. What do jobs pay in this area? Lower Savannah Nonmetro area: www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_4500004.htm
Employment by type of company (i.e. industry) is produced through the Quarterly Census of Employment & Wages program. Data is released each quarter and has a 6-month lag. What kinds of companies are in this area? http://www.dew.sc.gov/about-lmi-qcew.asp
What are the biggest companies in this area? Just the names of the top 20 companies are given, not employment numbers due to confidentiality issues. http://www.dew.sc.gov/about-lmi.asp
Since the QCEW data is “aged,” another program is done monthly to give “fresher” data. The Current Employment Statistics program uses a sample (compared to the QCEW data which is the universe). A 6-Month Lag? http://www.dew.sc.gov/about-lmi.asp
This data is available for the Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) only. Use Columbia MSA data for Newberry. Monthly Employment Data http://www.dew.sc.gov/about-lmi-ces.asp
What other questions do you get? What is the unemployment rate in this area? What is the age/race/gender/ education of the population in this area?
Unemployment Rate (by county) http://www.dew.sc.gov/about-lmi.asp
Unemployment Rate (by WIA) http://www.dew.sc.gov/about-lmi.asp
You don’t have to wait 10 years between Censuses. American Fact Finder produces data annually. Population Characteristics http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en
