My wake up call Dr Harold Letsoalo Ellisras Hospital Limpopo Province
Background • Medical school life • Fear • Lack of knowledge • Silence • Internship • Work overload • Direct supervision
Community service • New working environment • Responsibilities • Hierarchy and pecking order • Difficulties and frustrations • Experiences similar to previous background
Defining moment • A 16 year old patient who was referred from a clinic with eclampsia • My senior wanted to perform spinal anaesthesia which I objected to for valid medical reasons • “I am a Senior and you are a junior in this hospital, so you will do as I tell you” • When he insisted, I realised the danger to the patient
My journey… • I embarked on a journey to protect and promote human rights • Patients • HCPs • At that moment I was forced to speak out for the patient’s sake • I persisted and succeeded
…journey • Tried to seek remedial measures from the system • Awareness of deficiencies in the system • Retrospective awareness • inaction in the past • Prospective challenges…
Conclusion • How can human rights training alleviate the situation? • Victims e.g. students, junior HCP • Persons in positions of authority e.g. managers, senior HCP • Preventing perpetrators • Continuous monitoring and evaluation
