What is BYOD?. BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device. A “device” is defined as a privately owned laptop, tablet computing device, netbook, notebook, e-Reader, iPod Touch, iPad , or smartphone.

What is BYOD? • BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device. • A “device” is defined as a privately owned laptop, tablet computing device, netbook, notebook, e-Reader, iPod Touch, iPad, or smartphone. • For this program, “device” also includes any similar product owned by CCPS and provided for student use.
Why BYOD? • Our students are digital natives and live in a world where information creation and consumption is constantly occurring. • We feel that access to the tools and resources of a world-wide network and understanding when and how these tools are appropriately and effectively used are imperative in each student’s education. • We envision a learning environment where technology is a part of us, not apart from us.
When will BYOD begin? Phase 1 classroom implementation began in August 2013. Phase 2 classroom implementation began in January 2014. Phase 3 will begin in August 2014.
Which schools are involved in Phase 1? Which mobile devices are allowed? • Internet enabled devices that can connect to the district’s wireless network • These devices may include, but are not limited to: • iPod Touch • iPad • other tablet computing devices • smartphones • laptops • netbook • e-Readers
How will my student access the internet? • Students will access the internet through the CCPS BYOD wireless network. • This network will provide filtered internet access as well as access to some other District systems and resources. • Any and all access may be monitored for the purposes of network security and student safety.
What are the responsibilities of a student? • Read and adhere to the CCPS Responsible Use Agreement. • Access the internet through the CCPS BYOD network only. (Access of the internet through data plans such as 3G/4G networks is prohibited.) • CCPS is not responsible for any data or app charges that a student may incur from a service provider.
What are the responsibilities of a student? • Use of the CCPS BYOD network is for instructional and school related purposes only. Students may not use any device or service for non-educational purposes during school hours, unless granted permission by a school administrator or teacher. • Devices may only be used in certain approved areas of the school. Students may not use devices in parts of the school designated as no technology zones or any other areas where devices are not permitted.
What are the responsibilities of a student? • The student is responsible for the condition of any personal device used for BYOD including updates, antivirus software and any repairs. • Personal devices should be brought to school fully charged and should be capable of lasting a full school day without recharging. • The student is fully responsible, at all times, for personal devices brought to school. CCPS is not liable for any loss, damage, or theft of personally owned devices.
What are some of the other guidelines in place for students? • For classes where the teacher has opted to use a social media site for communication and/or assignments, the only approved social media site for the CCPS BYOD program is Edmodo. • No device, personal or otherwise, may be used to record, store, or transmit any type of image, sound or video from CCPS, except for approved projects and with the express permission of the teacher.
What are some of the other guidelines in place for students? If reasonable belief exists that the student has violated the terms of the Responsible Use Agreement, or other district policy, the student's device may be inspected and/or confiscated. Subsequent or additional disciplinary action involving misuse of technology may extend to loss of technology privileges or further action as determined by CCPS.
What are my responsibilities as a parent? • Carefully read and review the Responsible Use Agreementthat is located online within the CCPS Parent Portal BYOD section with your child and indicate your agreement. • Be sure your child’s device is in proper working order and is fully charged daily. • Monitor your child’s usage of their mobile devices.

How do I register my child for BYOD? • Login to the Parent Portal from the District Website. • Select BYOD. • Read and agree to the Responsible Use Agreementto enroll your child in the program. • Click on the following link for a step-by-step video that will lead you through the process. BYOD Parent Approval Process Video • If you have forgotten your ID or do not have a login to the Parent Portal, you will need to go to your child’s school to obtain this. Be sure to bring an ID with you.
What if my child doesn’t have a device to bring to school? • Not every child will have their own device. • The District will provide access to the internet via classroom computers and a limited number of mobile devices. • Students may collaborate with another student as appropriate.
